About Charles de Gaulle Detail
See de Gaulle main entry. His famous call of June 18 1940 from London urged the French to resist the German occupation. Few heard the broadcast but it became legendary. De Gaulles insistence on French greatness and independence from both superpowers defined French foreign policy. He blocked British entry into the EEC twice. He withdrew France from NATOs integrated military command in 1966. De Gaulle was a difficult ally for both the US and Britain, but he restored French pride and sovereignty after the humiliation of 1940.
