About Alexander Dubcek

The Czechoslovak leader who attempted to create socialism with a human face. Dubceks Prague Spring reforms in 1968 sought to loosen censorship, increase freedom, and reform the economy. The Soviet Union responded by invading with Warsaw Pact troops in August 1968. Dubcek was arrested, brought to Moscow, and forced to reverse his reforms. He was replaced by Gustav Husak in 1969 and expelled from the Communist Party. He worked as a forestry official for nearly two decades. After the Velvet Revolution in 1989, Dubcek became speaker of parliament. He died in a car crash in 1992.
