Women Who Broke Political Barriers
Female heads of government were rare before the 1960s. Sirimavo Bandaranaike of Sri Lanka became the first female Prime Minister in 1960. Indira Gandhi led India from 1966. Golda Meir led Israel from 1969.
Isabel Peron became President of Argentina in 1974. Margaret Thatcher broke barriers in Britain in 1979. Each faced skepticism about whether a woman could lead. They proved that gender is not a barrier to political power.
Their leadership styles varied enormously, from Thatchers confrontational conservatism to Merkels cautious pragmatism. Today female leaders are more common but still underrepresented..
